I just bought a new philips HTS3578W home theatre system and have connected it up to my TV and satellite box. When I switch on the power all I get is the red standby light. No matter what I press on the remote or the dvd player itself nothing else happens. What am I missing?

This question has two parts. Please be patient with me as I am a novice:

I have a Sony Bravia home theater system (dvd player w/ 5.1 surround sound), an HDTV cable box from my local provider, and an HDTV.

Right now I have the Home Theater System hooked up to the HDTV with a regular old red, white and yellow three-pronged wire. This allows me to watch DVDs in surround sound. However, I also want to be able to get surround sound when I watch television programs. To achieve this, I plan to buy an HDMI wire to connect the cable box to the television. Is that enough to get surround sound when watching both DVDs and regular TV?

Ideally, I would like to upgrade all my wires to HDMI but my home theater system only has one space to plug in one HDMI cable. So, my second question is, should I buy a replacement for my red white and yellow cord? Basically, what is the next best thing to an HDMI cable that I should use to connect my home theater system to the HDTV?

Thanks.

My girlfriend is looking to buy me a home theater system. I would love to use the speakers for my other devices. I already own an hdtv with 2 hi component and 2 hdmi ports, and 1 optical port in the back. The xbox 360 has no hdmi port built in and has the optical out, the blu ray player has an hdmi and optical out I think. The home theater system I was looking at a Samsung - 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with Upconvert DVD Player. Am I gonna have to switch wires around everytime I wanna use my xbox or blu ray player? Am I getting the wrong device? Or do I need a theater system with a receiver?

Those are the 3 items i want to connect (1080p lcd acer tv/compro videomate media player/sony home theatre system). The home theater system (Sony Dream Theatre Sound System - Model DAV-S880P) has a dvd player/amp as well as the surround sound speakers.

I would like to know how to hook it all up (how to do the cabling) so that when i play a movie from my media centre (not from the dvd player) the audio comes from the home theater speakers? (I will more than likely never use the dvd player anymore)

I was thinking that i need a HDMI cable and an audio optical cable (also known as toslink or S/PDIF)

Please tell me if i'm right or what i need and how to set it up

thanks! The Home theatre system has optical digital input and output if that helps

We just bought a new Home Theater system yesterday (because the last one we owned only had basic Left Right audio entries.) However when I connected the Coaxial Audio cable from my DVD player to the home theater receiver, I can hear the noise, except it sounds like if it skips. The sound just comes out like in pauses with a very brief pause constantly.. almost like a pulse sound. When I tried my normal TV using the Left Right (Red/White) audio cables the sound sounds perfect, also with all the other sources. This problem is only with the Coaxial Audio input.

I don't know if this would have anything to do with it, but since we just got the system, I haven't had time to set it up around our living room, so I only have the speakers ligned up on the floor with a couple inches within each other.

Could it be the cable that's bad?(even though it came brand new with the home theater)

I am planning to get the Onkyo HT-S7100, but I was just wondering if there was any system that is around the same price with a better performance. I have looked at many forums and reviews and almost everyone perferred Onkyo since most other system includes a DVD player in the receiver. So any thoughts would be appreciated.

The home theater system did not come with a receiver/amplifier because the DVD player has the 3 red/3 white speaker cables on it. When I hook up the audio cables of the Ps2 directly to the speakers and the video cable to the tv, everything works, except the sound is way too loud and there is no way to adjust the volume. The only way it could work would be if there was a remote for the ps2 that could control volume for games. Could I connect an optical cable to the DVD player and connect the DVD player's audio/video cables to the tv? Sorry if this is confusing and thanks in advance!
I tried that and it works but there is no way to adjust the volume.
