home theater receiver and cable tv?
at the moment i have a 5.1 home theatre system connected to cable tv. However when i turn my display (TV) off the home theatre speakers still outputs the audio its receiving from the cable tv. How would i stop this from happening?
also how would i be able to set the receiver so i have the option of choosing whether i want to use 5.1 sound or just from the tv speakers?
i hooked up the cable tv box to the receiver and the receiver outputs through hdmi to the tv.
at the moment when i turn the tv off i switch the receiver to an empty slot (like dvd) so there is no audio/video output. Is this good or should i just turn the receiver on to stand by.

I’m assuming you have the receiver hooked up directly to the cable box? How do you have the TV hooked up to the cable box? One option might be a multi-function or universal remote that you can set up to do multiple tasks with one push of a button (Logitech’s Harmony series). This way you could shut the TV and receiver off with the push of a button.
Its probably best to turn the receiver to standby when you shut your TV off. If you dont want 5.1 surround at times either turn the receiver to standby and turn up the volume on the TV, or some receivers have a stereo option on them (rather than the 5.1).
After you turn off your TV you stop the audio from continuing by turning off the cable and receiver.
If you want to choose between the receiver sound and the TV sound, you should be able to mute the receiver and turn up the TV volume independently.
You should turn off your receiver when you aren’t using it.
Yes. You can get a Harmony One and program a macro to turn on/off the TV, receiver, and cable box with a single press. I don’t own a Harmony One ( I have a URC MX-980 ) but I’ve had a chance to play with one. The way the touch screen works takes a little practice to get used to but it is probably the best I’ve handled as far as button placement and ergonomics go. You can find the Harmony One at Best Buy and see if you like it. I think they cost about $250. A Harmony 510 runs about $100 and might do what you need it to do w/o the flashy touch screen.
