I am looking to purchase a home theater system, but I want to know how I can have sound from my HDTV come through the system. What do I need to purchase other than the home theater system? Do I need a receiver? P.S. My tv has an optical audio out.

the sub wont hit, sound comes out but no bass at all any suggestions?
I recently bought a Sony Home Theater System that has a Center Speaker, Front Right/Left speakers, Surround Right/Left speakers and a Sub. I have them connected to a DVD player that came with the system and the DVD player is connected to my LG 42'' Plasma HDTV through a Digital Optical Cable and an HDMI cable.
After properly setting up my system, everything seems to be working as should except for the Center speaker. I hear a low ''hummmm'' sound when all other speakers are working fine.
I know that this center speaker works because when following the steps on the set-up disc that came with the system, a mans voice came on the centre speaker and said ''you should now be able to hear my voice on the center speaker".
I'm thinking that the problem may be in the audio setting on my TV or Home Theater system.
Somebody please help!!!!!
I would like one that is compatible with my wii, and mp3 player, and also has a dvd player (full system) I would like to spend 0-0, and it is for use with my projector in my movie room.
I'm looking at the Sony DAV-HDX500/i BRAVIA Home Theater System and it says it has an mp3 hook up etc... a wii won't hook up to that?
I have a cheap Sony HTS, 5.1, incuded 5 shelf speakers and subwoofer for 9 three years ago. I think the receiver is 100 Watt.
It worked great for my 2 bedroom apartment, but I've recently upgraded to a large home prewired for surround sound. I've purchased four 90 watt 5.5" Boston Acoustic in-ceiling speakers and a Polk CS1 Center speaker upto 125 watts.
My concern? I've hooked up the CS1 and am not getting the volume I want (I didn't expect it to sound like the system in the store, but I did expect it to sound better than the original center speaker I had). Now I am concerned to cut holes in my ceiling for the four surround speakers to find they don't perform any better than the bookshelves. Do I just install the rear channel in-ceiling speakers until I can afford a higher wattage receiver? How many watts do I need to support these speakers? What's a decent, budget brand?

I am wondering what the best way to calibrate a 5.1 surround sound system. I just purchased at theater in a box 5.1 system. Do you set the levels of the different speakers to a certain loudness? What am I supposed to listen for?
Are there any DVD movies that are available that have a channel test or a good one to test/enjoy excellent surround sound mixing and design?
thanks!
